Experience pain relief with neuromuscular therapy

Also known as trigger-point therapy, neuromuscular therapy uses soft-tissue manipulation to balance your nervous system with the musculoskeletal system. During neuromuscular therapy, your chiropractor or therapist will put concentrated finger pressure on certain trigger points to reduce and relieve pain in muscles, tendons, and connective tissue. This therapy also helps rebuild the strength of injured tissue, restores posture and flexibility, and relieves muscle tension. The goal of neuromuscular therapy is to address the underlying cause of pain and dysfunction in the body.

The nervous system is responsible for your movements, thoughts, and function, and can be thrown off-balance due to injury, trauma, stress, and postural distortion. Neuromuscular therapy helps stabilize your nervous system activity so you can maintain normal functioning and good overall health.

Neuromuscular therapy can treat pain caused by compressed nerves, postural distortion, and highly irritated trigger points in muscles that lead to pain in other parts of the body. This therapy can also treat ischemia — lack of blood supply to tissues, which can make you highly sensitive to touch — along with biomechanical dysfunction that causes you to demonstrate faulty movements.

Did you know?

In many instances, the source of chronic pain is often caused by soft tissue dysfunction. Soft tissue dysfunction itself is often caused by injuries related to auto accidents, certain occupations, sports, and intense physical activity. But neuromuscular therapy stimulates soft tissue to accelerate and promote your body’s natural healing process. Muscles that are relaxed using this therapy can start receiving greater blood flow and oxygen levels, helping you experience lasting relief from muscle pain and soreness.

Frequently asked questions about neuromuscular therapy

What happens during neuromuscular therapy?

Your chiropractor or therapist applies pressure to your muscle spasms for between 10 and 30 seconds using their fingers, knuckles, or elbows.

Is neuromuscular therapy painful?

Neuromuscular therapy may feel painful or uncomfortable at first, but as your chiropractor puts pressure on your muscle spasms, any related pain or discomfort will gradually subside. Communicate with your doctor regarding whether pressure is too gentle or too strong so they can adjust pressure accordingly.

What can I expect after receiving neuromuscular therapy?

You may experience soreness for up to 36 hours after receiving neuromuscular therapy. However, this soreness should gradually start fading after the 24-hour mark.

How long does neuromuscular therapy last?

Muscle spasms usually require about four treatment sessions over the course of six weeks, though the length of treatment may vary depending on the severity of your injury or condition.

Who can benefit the most from neuromuscular therapy?

People who suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome, headaches, pain, and movement disorders can benefit from receiving neuromuscular therapy. People recovering from brain trauma and stroke can also benefit from lasting pain relief and improved functioning. Generally, you may be an ideal candidate for neuromuscular therapy if muscle and soft tissue pain are interfering with your livelihood and ability to perform normal everyday tasks.
